The High Line
A relic reimagined invigorates the Far West Side
What do you do with a beat-up old rail line? In New York you turn it into a brilliantly-executed municipal park.
This imaginative response to a problem of long-standing is changing the city. Twenty-five feet above the ground, the High Line runs around and through old warehouses, factories, and slaughterhouses. A walk through any part of its 1.5 miles affords a distinctive experience of leisure and beauty overlooking an industrial past and an upscale present.
Since opening in 2009 the park has occasioned the re-creation of the entire district, with fine restaurants, hotels, and boutiques now dominating what had been a run-down and forsaken neighborhood. The Far West Side, formerly known as the Wild West, has blossomed into a destination of choice.
